Bart De Block
Bart De Block started his ballet training at the age of 9 in his hometown, Ghent. He was then referred by his teacher to the Stedelijk Institute for Ballet (now The Royal Ballet School of Antwerp). From 1980 to 1986 he won several medals in competitions such as the Prix de Lausanne, Jackson Mississippi and Houlgate. After graduation, he was accepted into the Royal Ballet of Flanders, but after one year left for Berlin, where he danced for nine years as a principal dancer at the Deutsche Oper. During this period he was fortunate to work with many choreographers such as: Maurice Béjart, Michael Clark, Stephen Petronio, Karole Armitage, Kenneth McMillan, Christopher Bruce, to name a few. An important highlight was the invitation at the time as a guest dancer with the Kirov Ballet in St Petersburg. After Berlin he left for New York. Three years later he was a dancer and assistant to artistic director at The Mark Baldwin Dance Company in London. After London he returned to Antwerp where he was a principal dancer with the Royal Ballet of Flanders for two years. He then became a national and international freelance dancer in Japan, Brazil, Canada, USA, Germany, France, Italy, Korea… In 2005, after obtaining his pedagogical diploma, he was appointed as a dance teacher at the Royal Ballet School of Antwerp.
